OPEN LETTER TO THE UNFCCC FROM THE PEOPLE OF BANGKOK

To: Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

One year and four months have gone, since We, the people of Bangkok, came here at the United Nations Conference Centre to express our support to UNFCCC in the global efforts to deal with climate change as we truly believe that the UNFCCC has the capacity to turn our planet away from the disastrous impacts caused by this man-made phenomenon. Last time we urged the UNFCCC to recognize and promote walking and use of bicycle as a form of sustainable mobility and joyfully received positive response from you. With the UNFCCC, progress has been made here and there. Since the UN Rio+20 Conference earlier in June this year also confirmed that a key to human’s sustainable future is use of non-motorized transport, that importantly is walking and cycling, in urban centres and rail system between them, this time we wish to urge the UNFCCC to send stronger signals to governments, particularly the government of Thailand, to adopt promotion of non-motorized transport as a public policy and a main strategy to cut down use of fossil fuel in transport sector, contributing to the country’s reduction of greenhouse gas emission. We, the people of Bangkok, on the other hand, will do more in our part to adopt walking and use of bicycle as a main means of transport. The people of Bangkok 2nd September 2012
