The 5th Thailand Bike and Walk Forum

The newly declared 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2017-2021) requires development of crossways, walkways and bikeways for connections with public transport systems in the city, management of transport systems to reduce use of private cars (demand management), and development of regions, cities and economic areas with development of public transport systems, which are low cost and environmentally friendly, focusing on bus system, to promote transport that is safe for people of all ages and disabled persons.

In response to the national development plan, Ministry of Transport, Thai Health Promotion Foundation, Thailand Walking and Cycling Institute (TWCI) and Thailand Cycling Club (TCC) together with related government agencies, local administrative organisations, education institutes and civil society organisations join hands to organize the 5th Thailand Bike and Walk Forum on March 3, 2017 at Chalerm Rajakumari 60 Building in Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok.

The theme of this annual symposium in 2017 is “Walk and Bike Friendly City-Community” to stimulate more interests and actions to adopt non-motorised transport, walking and cycling, as a preferred mode for short-distance travel and a feeder system connecting with public transport.  Keynote Speech of the forum this year would be given by Prof. Atsushi Fukuda, Ph.D., Head of the Department of Transportation Engineering and Socio-technology, College of Science and Technology, Nihon University in Japan on why and how so many Japanese people use bicycle in their daily life.  Fitting with venue of the forum being in Chulalongkorn University for the first time, Associate Prof. Panit Phujinda, Ph.D., Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University, will talk about cycling promotion in Chulalongkorn University Campus.  Afternoon sessions would go into more details with presentations of research findings related to the forum’s theme in six areas – policy and law, infrastructure, attitudes and behaviours, society and health, walking and cycling ecotourism, and indicators for walking & cycling friendly city.  Afterward, participants in the forum, which are expected to be about 200 from all over the country, would have plenty of opportunities for open discussions.
